Gas Furnace Maintenance
Regular maintenance is the cornerstone of keeping your home comfort equipment running at peak performance. But it can be difficult to understand what a good maintenance routine should include and what you should look for as a homeowner. The following resources will help you determine the best maintenance schedule for your HVAC equipment, what questions to ask Ambient Air and general do-it-yourself maintenance tips.
Furnace Maintenance
Confirm the furnace completes a normal cycle from start-up to shutdown. Look at the thermostat reading to confirm the system shuts off when reaching the high temperature set point. If the furnace shuts off before reaching the high set point, it’s likely having a short cycling problem and requires a service call.
Clean dust or move objects away from the grates that supply air into each room – and remember to keep the large return grate clear and clean, too.
Clear obstacles from the furnace and safety switch on the furnace door.
Check vent connections in the exhaust pipe and chimney for rust or gaps.
Make sure your carbon dioxide monitor is operating properly/has fresh batteries.
Replace furnace filters annually.

Gas Furnace Troubleshooting Guide
Is your thermostat ready?
- Is your thermostat set in the HEAT position?
- Is the temperature setting on the thermostat set higher than the thermostat’s indoor temperature?
Is everything on?
- Is the power turned on for your furnace?
- At the thermostat, turn the fan to ON. The fan should run when power is being supplied to the furnace.
- Did the circuit breakers in the circuit breaker box (or electrical panel) trip to the OFF position?
- Check the SSU light switch on the gray box located at the furnace to make sure it is in the ON position.
Is there proper airflow?
- Have you changed your filter?
- A blocked filter can cause your unit to shut down due to lack of proper airflow.
- Are the air registers (supply or return ducts) plugged?
